6 Reasons Why You're NOT Losing Weight to start living healthier today!

We all have a story in our head about why weight loss is hard.

And if we’re being honest, that voice inside of us, the one that controls our thoughts can be hard to ignore at times…

I mean, we hear it speak all sorts of crazy things to us. Things like: I won’t ever be able to lose weight; I wasn’t born with the right genetics to make weight loss possible for me; This fitness thing is just too dang hard, I might as well give up now

But the sad truth is that these thoughts don’t always register as crazy. In fact, it’s quite the opposite- we tend to believe this narrative.

Now, if you’ve fallen into the habit of believing the voice inside your head, I’m here to tell you that what you’re hearing isn’t entirely true.

You see, as a fitness professional, I’ve heard just about every excuse in the book as to why weight loss isn’t possible.

What I’ve found is that, when something seems out of our reach, we have this natural tendency to make up stories that a task is difficult or complicated because then we get to save face; we have a reason as to why we haven’t achieved a particular goal yet. And honestly, it feels good to have a justification as to why we’re not where we’d like to be.

The problem is that the more often we feed ourselves the belief that fitness is difficult or not within our reach, the more likely we are to believe it. The more likely we are to stay stuck where we currently are.

So how do we prevent these beliefs from holding us back from reaching our fitness goals?

Today I’m going to help you bust through these false beliefs by explaining why they are actually lies. Keep reading, my friend, because in this blog post, I’m sharing with you 3 Big Secrets to Lasting Weight Loss (told through the lies you’ve been believing)

Weight Loss Secret #1

THE LIE: I don’t have enough time.

THE TRUTH: You have time but if you’re always feeling like you don’t, it’s likely a lack of prioritization causing your problem.

You see, most women feel overwhelmingly busy. We take care of things at home; we tend to responsibilities at work; and we juggle it all while trying to manage relationships and family.

It’s no surprise that we’re constantly on the move, always moving from one thing to the next. And while the end result is that we may knock a lot of items off of our to-do list, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re being productive.

You see, when we spend more time working on tasks that aren’t all that important, we feel “busy” but not necessarily “accomplished”.

Productive women know that their time is limited, and so they choose to focus their attention on high-priority tasks that actually move them closer to their goals.

So how exactly do you prioritize what’s important?

You’ve likely heard all the self-help stuff before: do what matters; focus on what’s important…

But what do you delete from your to-do list when it all feels important and you have no idea how or what to prioritize?

Simple, you get crystal clear on what you want your future to look like and you work backwards from there.

Or if you’re a little unsure of what you’d like from life, ask yourself this question instead: what would your future-self be most disappointed with if you decided to give it up today?

Let me give you an example: Have you ever been really excited to introduce some change into your life? Maybe it’s the decision to lose weight…

You have a plan and you start off strong; you actually make it to the gym for three straight weeks,  but then life happens and you give up your healthy habit.

A few weeks or months go by and you find the motivation to get started on introducing that change back into your life. But this time around you can’t help but feel a little tug at your heart because you know that if you’d stuck with your original plan to lose weight, you’d be so much farther along by now?

That little tug at your heart- that my friend, is disappointment.

When you can identify the things that will cause your future-self to feel disappointed by if you don’t follow through with them- those are tasks that deserve higher priority on your list.

Time is a luxury; it’s something that we can’t create; however, we are free to decide on how we want to use it. When we delegate more time to doing the stuff that matters and delete more of what doesn’t, we find that we are more likely to end up in the direction of where we want to go.

Weight Loss Secret #2

THE LIE: I’m not motivated enough to make changes to my health and fitness routine.

THE TRUTH: Everyone has the ability to improve their health. The most successful women, however, understand how to leverage the right kind of motivation so that they actually follow through with their fitness goals.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret- willpower doesn’t work!

Everyone talks about it, and it’s commonly believed to be the one factor that determines your success in reaching your fitness goals. I mean, you either want it bad enough or you don’t, right?

Never mind that no one tells us exactly how-to harness this magical power. It’s more or less assumed that either you’re born with it or you’re not.

And for those lucky few that possess this superhuman power- well congratulations, temptation has nothing on you. But for the rest of us, it’s as though we are destined to live a life where we’ll forever be held captive by the sweet temptation of Oreo’s, M&M’s or what have you…

There are some articles out there on the Internet that liken willpower to a muscle on our body- we must use it to strengthen it. But if you think that the more you resist temptation, the more likely you’ll be to resist it- you’re doing yourself a great disservice.

I mean seriously, when was the last time telling yourself you couldn’t have something made you want it less?

If anything, I’m sure it only made you want it more!

Willpower is the ability to exert self-control over a situation. Though we wish it existed in unlimited supply, the truth is that willpower is very much a finite source. Every decision we make in a day takes from that reservoir of willpower that we hold within us.

And I’m not just talking about diet + exercise decisions. Choosing to finish that expense report over scrolling the Internet taxes the same source of willpower as deciding to order a salad over a cheeseburger at lunch.

The more we deplete that center of self-control without replenishing it, the more trouble we find in resisting temptations that go against our fitness goals.

That’s why a long day of having to control ourselves at work is reason enough to forget about our diets + dive head first into that pint of ice cream we have hidden in the back of the freezer.

So, does this mean that if we face too many temptations that we are destined to fail? That we should give up before we even start because there’s no hope for us at all?

Nope, not at all.

Despite what you may think right now, we all have it within us to reach success. The good news is that researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted.

Rather, it appears that people tend to hold some willpower in reserve- available to use for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to persevere even when our self-control strength has been run down.

That’s why it’s not enough to rely on willpower alone, you have to have something more, you have to have a why-power.

You see, the most productive people start with purpose.

That’s right- goals may guide us but purpose is what DRIVES us. And that’s where so many of us get this fitness thing wrong.

We believe that setting the ‘right’ goal will pull us in the direction that we’re wanting to go.

We decide that we want to be 10 lbs lighter. We want to feel more confident in a bathing suit. We want to wake up with energy instead of relying on coffee + energy drinks to get us through our day.

We believe that ‘wanting’ something is enough motivation to achieve it.

But here’s the truth- that desire only works in the short-term. We can talk ourselves out of wanting something as easily as we can talk ourselves into it. And when challenges arise- that’s exactly what we do.

When we’re too tired to workout, we convince ourselves that it’s not important. When we’re too lazy to prepare a healthy meal we tell ourselves fast-food will do.

Without purpose, every action we take is pointless.

The magic to achieving fitness success is discovering our ‘why’.

When we have a ‘why’ behind the things that we do, we don’t question the action that we need to take, we don’t make excuses for when things get tough, we don’t settle for anything less- because we can see beyond the mundane actions we’re performing + we can make sense of it all.

Purpose connects us to the bigger picture at hand. Purpose creates meaning. And finding your purpose, well, there’s power in that.

If you’re having trouble staying committed to your health and fitness goals, you just haven’t connected yourself to the greater “why” that’s guiding your actions.

Weight Loss Secret #3

THE LIE: It’s too expensive to get healthy.

THE TRUTH: Improving your health has one of the highest ROI out there.

What is it costing you to not put time, attention + money into improving your health + fitness?

You see, There’s a far greater benefit to getting healthy than just a smaller jean size.

Most women believe that the main benefit to working-out + eating right is a smaller jean size.

And sure, while it would be nice to flaunt a smaller silhouette, at the end of the day does it really matter that much?

I mean, you have bigger, more pressing things on your plate– right?

So, you decide against a fitness routine (for now) and you promise yourself that you’ll start working-out again once life calms down.

You settle.

You settle because even though you know that you could do better, you also realize that your health could be worse- so you decide it’s alright to coast somewhere in the middle.

But here’s the deal- settling (especially when it comes to your health and fitness) keeps you from experiencing some pretty ah-mazing things!

Exercise may seem like an ordinary habit on the surface- but research shows that exercise is, more importantly, a ‘keystone’ habit.

In architecture, the keystone locks all the other stones into position like in the picture below.

In life, keystone habits are the glue that allows other good habits to take hold.

Taking care of yourself is a small spark that ignites the sort of change that allows your life to run smoothly- no more crying in that glass of wine at night 😉

That’s right, women who take action to improve their health tend to also experience:

  • More productivity at work
  • More restful nights’ sleep
  • Improved relationships with their spouse
  • Even more financial stability

And it all stems from one simple decision to change your life.

I think it’s important for women to realize that when you run the numbers, you’ll always come out ahead when you choose to take care of yourself.

Making the decision to invest time + energy into improving yourself is about having more of yourself to give to others, not less.

I’m talking about:

> MORE energy so that you can play with your little ones.

> MORE productivity and mental alertness so that you can accomplish amazing success at work

> And more confidence so that you can attract the kind of opportunities into your life that truly bring you joy.

Remember, if you want to give your light to others, you have to shine first, my friend!

When we dig deeper into the excuses that have prevented us from seeing success with our health and fitness goals, what we’ll typically find is that they are just that- excuses.

You hold the power to take your life in quite literally any direction that you decide. Don’t waste this power!

Now, if I haven’t shared this thought with you already, let me just say that I believe in your ability to reach any + all goals you set for yourself.

The bigger question, however, is- do you?
